Trump eyeing Jay Bhattacharya for NIH Director

President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering Stanford professor Jay Bhattacharya as his top pick for the position of National Institutes of Health (NIH) director. Known for his outspoken criticism of COVID-19 lockdowns, Bhattacharya’s potential nomination represents a shift towards more focused, targeted health policies.

Bhattacharya, co-author of the Great Barrington Declaration, has been a vocal critic of sweeping public health measures during the pandemic. He advocated for a strategy of “focused protection,” emphasizing that vulnerable populations, like the elderly, should receive targeted care rather than imposing broad restrictions or mandates on the entire population.

The nomination of Bhattacharya for the NIH role would give him the authority to influence health policy with a budget of $48 billion annually. This could redefine U.S. public health strategies.

As a critic of universal vaccination, Bhattacharya co-authored a 2020 essay titled “The Ill-Advised Push to Vaccinate the Young,” where he argued that vaccinating healthy young adults and children was not only unnecessary but could pose risks to public health. His stance challenges mainstream public health narratives that emphasized mass vaccination.

Furthermore, Bhattacharya has been an outspoken opponent of vaccine passports and mandates, calling them unconstitutional. He believes such policies infringe on individual freedoms and go against scientific principles of personal choice in medical decision-making.

Bhattacharya has also been critical of the broader public health community’s response to COVID-19, accusing officials of taking an overly restrictive approach.

In addition to his academic work, Bhattacharya’s stance on COVID-19 policies led to a confrontation with his employer, Stanford University. The professor claimed that the institution attempted to censor him by preventing media appearances and public discussions on his views, arguing that this violated his academic freedom.

Throughout his career, Bhattacharya has focused on the health and well-being of vulnerable populations. His research has covered a wide range of topics, including epidemiology and policy evaluation, particularly in relation to COVID-19. For his contributions to intellectual freedom, Bhattacharya was awarded the Robert J. Zimmer Medal from the American Academy of Sciences & Letters.

Alongside Bhattacharya, Trump has made several other nominations for key health positions. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was nominated for Secretary of Health and Human Services, while Dr. Dave Weldon has been suggested as the Director of the CDC. Dr. Janette Nesheiwat may be appointed Surgeon General, and Dr. Marty Makary has been nominated for Commissioner of the FDA.
