Australia rejects ‘fascist’ misinformation bill in victory for free speech

The Australian Senate has rejected a controversial bill aimed at combating online misinformation, marking a significant win for freedom of speech advocates.

The bill, proposed by the Labor Party government, sought to impose hefty fines on internet platforms, including a penalty of up to 5% of their global revenue, for failing to prevent the “spread of misinformation”.

However, the proposal was met with widespread opposition. The Liberal-National coalition, Australian Greens, and crossbench senators all voted against the legislation.

The proposed legislation was seen by many as an attempt by the Australian government to regulate the internet, a move that some critics likened to censorship. Elon Musk, CEO of X (formerly Twitter), expressed his approval of the Senate’s decision, tweeting, “Australia Votes for Freedom!”
