Elon Musk calls Twitter’s suspension of Donald Trump “outrageous”

Elon Musk recently condemned Twitter’s 2021 suspension of former President Donald J. Trump, describing the platform’s decision as “outrageous” during a town hall event in Philadelphia.

The billionaire, who endorsed Trump following a July assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, voiced his frustration with social media censorship, particularly by big tech companies like Google.

Musk noted that his decision to acquire Twitter—now rebranded as X—stemmed from a growing concern over increasing control by what he described as “far-left activists” within major social media companies.

He asserted that such entities “manipulate the truth constantly” and restrict access to information through ideological filters, stating, “How do you know what’s real when it’s all filtered through a far-left, San Francisco, Berkeley lens?”

Musk further expressed concerns that tech companies’ alleged bias could potentially limit users’ access to unfiltered information, especially when using platforms like Google.

According to Musk, Google’s algorithms often bury certain results, forcing users to search multiple pages to locate information, while Twitter’s suspension of Trump’s account during his presidency exemplified what he views as an unjust overreach by tech platforms.

“I think it was only a matter of time before they suspended my account,” Musk said, adding that his own outspoken views could have led to his account’s removal “six ways to Sunday” under previous management.

Musk explained that X is now a rare space where users can access “what’s actually going on and what’s real,” contrasting it with platforms that he claims favor certain viewpoints over others.

Since taking over Twitter, Musk has sought to overhaul its approach to free speech, positioning X as a platform committed to transparency and diverse perspectives.

The suspension of Trump’s account remains a controversial issue, and Musk’s critique aligns with a broader political debate over social media’s role in moderating public discourse.

Musk’s remarks reflect his position as an advocate for unfiltered online expression, an approach he has championed through his ownership of X.
