Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman who joined the Republican Party earlier this year and backed Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, recently disclosed her potential role in the new administration’s transition team. Following Trump’s landslide victory, Gabbard expressed her commitment to supporting Trump’s foreign policy goals, particularly in matters related to veterans and avoiding unnecessary conflicts.
Gabbard highlighted her military background and her dedication to a foreign policy that prioritizes diplomacy. “The most important commitment that veterans and servicemen and women should have from our leaders…is to make sure that our men and women in uniform are only sent into harm’s way…as a last resort after all measures of diplomacy have been exhausted,” she said in an interview with Chris Cuomo on NewsNation. Gabbard believes Trump’s approach aligns with these principles, as evidenced by his direct diplomacy efforts during his previous term.
She cited Trump’s previous administration as a model for peace-oriented policies, mentioning Trump’s willingness to engage directly with foreign leaders, including adversaries, as a critical factor in his success. “In his last administration…he went out and met with dictators and adversaries in that pursuit of peace for the American people,” she stated, underscoring Trump’s efforts to reduce international tensions.
Gabbard also noted that many Americans supported Trump in this election for his emphasis on avoiding escalation toward a potential global conflict, contrasting this stance with what she described as the current administration’s foreign policy. “His goal is to end wars, not start them,” she remarked, adding that Trump has frequently addressed the need to prevent the potential risks of World War III, a topic Gabbard says received little attention from Vice President Kamala Harris during her campaign.
When asked about a potential cabinet role, Gabbard did not specify her preferred position. However, she indicated her readiness to serve in any capacity that could contribute to achieving Trump’s peace-focused goals. “President Trump…is looking at making these decisions about who he wants to serve on his team and in his cabinet. If there is any way that I can help achieve that goal and objective of preventing World War III and nuclear war, of course I’d be honored to serve,” Gabbard explained.
As a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve and a veteran of multiple deployments, Gabbard emphasized her understanding of the challenges and responsibilities of military service, a perspective she believes would be valuable in an administration prioritizing diplomacy and de-escalation. Though she did not outline a specific role, her remarks signal a willingness to take on duties aligned with Trump’s stated goals.
Gabbard’s alignment with Trump’s policy stance on reducing military interventions marks a significant shift from her previous party affiliation. Her recent affiliation with the Republican Party and vocal support for Trump’s re-election bid emphasize her departure from past alliances and her commitment to a strategy she sees as critical for U.S. national security.
